German beer sales fell 4.6% month over month in September, with exports providing a cushion
Nov 05, 2026

According to data from the German Brewers Association cited by the Federal Association of German Beverage Wholesalers, total German beer sales in September 2026 fell by 4.6% compared with August. Domestic sales in Germany declined by 7.3%, while exports grew by 9.4%, providing some cushioning for beer producers.

Despite warm, dry summer weather, consumer demand at the point of sale was not effectively stimulated. The decline in domestic sales contrasted with export growth, indicating that the two market segments moved in different directions in September. However, export growth was not enough to offset the impact of lower domestic sales on total sales.

For beer producers, the differing trends in domestic sales and exports mean that the impact on their businesses may vary depending on their respective sales mix. Month-on-month data for a single month reflects the change in September compared with August and is not sufficient to indicate whether this trend will continue. Going forward, it will be worth monitoring changes in domestic sales and exports, as well as whether export growth can continue to cushion the impact of weak domestic demand.
